28th Malta Marathon – February 24, 2013
Mohammed Hajjy makes it 3 Malta Marathons in a row
Carmen Hili wins her 7th Malta Marathon
Triathlete wins Malta Half Marathon
Angele Sammut wins her 2nd Malta Half Marathon
Not only did Mohammed Hajjy match Addelkabir Marchane’s 3 in a row (2003, 04 and 05) but he also managed to set a course record finishing in 2:16:06. Mohammed is now only 1 win short of Addelkabir Marchane 4 wins who also won in 2001.
This was a day for records as Carmen Hili whilst winning her 7th Malta Marathon also set a course record for Maltese ladies finishing in 2:56:40.
Ther were many other personal records in both the Marathon and Half Marathon on a course that has been unchanged since 2008. The weather and athmosphere must have contributed to these personal bests.
The greatest records however were the number of persons participating in both the Marathon and Half Marathon. Not only was there an overall record number but there was a record number of Maltese participants as well as foreign participants.
The Malta Half Marathon was won by Polish Triathlete Mateusz Kazimierczak with Angele Sammut taking the ladies honours. Unfortunately the finishing times over the past few years have not been too spectacular, it’s been quite some time since we have had a 1:07 or 1:08 finishing time not to mention the 1:02 1st and 2nd finishing times in 1995. The ladies finishing times have had the same fate as apart from 2011 when Lorraine Manning fininshed in 1:15 it’s been quite some time since we have had a sub 1:20, the likes of which Carol Walsh produced many times.
